TOOLS TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY & PRODUCTION
If you’ve been following along with our Field Tested series, you’ve seen Montana farmers demonstrating a wide variety of tools and solutions to increase production and create on-farm efficiencies. At the Tool Expo, we’ll kick off our 2019 Farmer Field Days with demos of many of these tools, all in one convenient location. This workshop will be a chance to see new tools in action, hear from farmers who have tested them in the field, and try things out yourself.
JOSH VOLK ON TOOL SYSTEMS THINKING
What if you decide to add one of these tools on your farm? How will this affect the other parts of your production system? Josh Volk from Slow Hand Farm will be there to help answer these questions and make tools system decisions for your farm. Josh will talk about efficient tool use and designing cohesive systems on your farm, so that each of your tools combines to create highly effective systems. Josh lives and farms in Portland, Oregon. In addition to his production work, Josh consults with other farms on increasing on-farm efficiencies, and recently authored the book Compact Farms -15 Proven Plans for Market Farms on 5 Acres or Less.
A FEW OF THE TOOLS:
Multi Row Jang Seeder
Missoula Grain & Vegetable Co will be there to talk about the Jang 6-row precision seeder. This tool has helped them double their production and save time seeding, though they report it took some learning to figure out the best way to use it. Come learn their tricks and try it out!
Paper Pot Transplant System
Sweet Root Farm will demo the paper pot transplant system and talk about how it can accelerate your transplanting process, and improve a succession planting schedule. There will be paper pots ready to transplant, so come see firsthand how this system works.
EVENT DETAILS
The field day will be held at County Rail Farm and details and directions will be sent to registrants before the event. We hope you’ll join us for a potluck after the Expo to visit more with Josh and the rest of the farmers. Please bring a dish and serving utensils. Children are welcome at the event, though they may not be able to test some of the tools. Thank you in advance for leaving your dogs at home.
